 What is Black Friday

Black Friday originated in America and refers to the day after Thanksgiving where retailers would see the unofficial start of the holiday spending season that, unsurprisingly, would see their sales and profits rise into the black. It is known as "black" because businesses record their profits in black and their loses in red on a traditional financial balance sheet. The name itself is attributed to the Philadelphia Police Dept. in the 50s-60s who used the term to describe the sheer and utter chaos the Thanksgiving sales period was providing. Traffic Jams, chaos and massive sales where the norm as retailers look to build a successful Christmas Sale period. The actual event goes back longer than that and has deep roots in the US dating back into the 1930s. Retailers and businesses lobbied the President of the time to actually more the US holiday Thanksgiving to an earlier time in the calendar to the Christmas shopping period would be longer and more lucrative.

 Black Friday in the UK

The Black Friday offers and event itself has grown in the UK over the past 3 years and has become a major shopping event for shoppers to get their Christmas gifts early and at a massive saving. In 2013 there was a massive media interest in the event which saw Black Friday deals being fought over as retailers offered massive savings and deals right across the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. In 2015, online retailers started forming online queues that mirrored the high street stores in order to give people an opportunity to bag a bargain. But what can 2016 provide? All we know is that the Black Friday deals are likely to be bigger, better and more sought after than ever before.
