Which Tactical Winter Jacket Should You Choose?

Finding the ideal tactical winter jacket or coat can be daunting, with so many features and technology present in the tactical clothing market it can be tricky to find the right coat for the job. We want to make it is easy for you and therefore we have answered some of the most common questions when it comes to our tactical jackets.

What’s the difference between a hardshell and softshell jacket?

Softshell jackets are designed for mobility and comfort while moving around. They are often referred to as sports jackets as they are light-weight and have a flexible outer shell. They are normally worn underneath other garments or on their own in less severe weather. A common feature among softshells is their breathability. Because they can be worn either on their own or as an insulating layer for skiing and snowboarding, breathability is of key importance because not only does it help regulate body temperature and prevents overheating, it also helps wick moisture away. This results in a dry and moisture-free jacket, which is ideal.

Weather-wise, softshells are best suited for dry and mild temperatures, because they are not designed for excessive warmth or raining. The majority of softshells are water-resistant by having a water-repellent shell that is DWR-treated. Some, on the other hand, can be fully waterproof.

Hardshell jackets are completely the opposite, as in the name the outer shell is hard. They do not have as much flexibility and movement. They usually come with a hood and their main feature is their waterproof and (sometimes) windproof outer shell that makes these jackets suitable for rainy weather.

When it comes to insulation, they differ from each other due to the fabrics being used.

Some provide adequate insulation, while others do not have an insulating lining on the inside, which is why these jackets are more suitable for layering and reserved only for when it rains.

What does 2L, 2.5L & 5L mean?

These are used to describe the construction of the jacket. 2L is 2 layered construction where a waterproof breathable membrane is laminated to the backside (interior-facing) of the shell fabric.

2.5L = 2 layered construction as above plus a printed layer on the backside (the next-to-skin, interior-facing) of the fabric for the wearer’s comfort

3L = 3 layered construction where the waterproof breathable membrane layer is laminated between the shell fabric and backer fabric. The backer fabric protects the membrane from wear and tear. This creates a more durable garment with lasting waterproof properties.

How waterproof is this coat?

One of the most common questions we get asked about waterproof tactical jackets is: how waterproof is this coat? You’ll be pleased to know there is a gage and most outerwear jackets/coats will have a label and a number for you to follow. The first number represents how much pressure is required to force water through the membrane, the higher the better. The second number represents how much moisture the membrane can transport away from your skin to be evaporated, the higher the better.

What are the main differences between a 5-in-1 2.0 jacket and a 3-in-1 2.0?

5.11’s 3-in-1 and 5-in-1 System jackets were introduced back in 2005. From major urban centers in the US, the far rural expanses of Canada and to the mountains of Northern Europe, 5.11’s jackets have been proven around the world for more than fifteen years. These new 2.0 versions were designed to match the visual appearance of our time-tested jackets while dramatically improving their fit. In addition to an updated fit, these new jackets are built with modern high performance waterproof breathable membrane and construction methods for best-in class performance.

While they visually similar to the predecessors here are some of the additional features include: a higher armhole for movement, longer, less bulky sleeve, body trimmed to reduce bulk, waist levels and hems adjusted.
