Tools for time outdoors
Outdoor use asks different things of a tool than work or duty. A saw that cuts kindling, a blade that can be resharpened in the field, pliers that will pull a hot pan off a stove or crimp a fishing line, and a body that shrugs off rain and mud all matter more than a bit driver. The tools here are selected on those criteria from the Leatherman and Gerber ranges and from specialist knife makers.
Camping and bushcraft
The Leatherman Signal is designed for exactly this, with a 420HC combo blade, saw, hammer, ferrocerium fire starter, whistle and diamond sharpener. The Surge and Wave+ add a longer saw and file for camp carpentry, and the Free series brings one-handed operation. For bushcraft, a fixed-blade knife with full-tang construction and a Scandi or flat grind is the tool for feathering, batoning and carving, carried in a secure sheath.
Hunting and shooting
For stalking, shooting and game preparation a fixed blade or locking folder with a plain edge and a comfortable, grippy handle is the priority, with a gut hook on some models. The Leatherman MUT and Gerber's firearms-focused tools cover rifle maintenance in the field, and a bit kit with the right Torx and hex sizes handles scope mounts and rails.
Carrying tools for an activity
Camping, bushcraft, hunting and shooting are all good reason to carry a locking knife or fixed blade under UK law, provided the tool is being used for that purpose and transported sensibly to and from it. Outside the activity, the UK carry-friendly collection lists tools that can be carried every day.
