Kit that has to work first time
A first responder's tools are used in the dark, in the rain, wearing gloves, on a casualty who may be trapped or unconscious. That rules out anything fiddly. The tools in this collection share the same qualities: they open one-handed, cut without exposing a blade to the patient, and are robust enough to be dropped, trodden on and decontaminated.
Trauma shears and rescue multi-tools
The Leatherman Raptor Rescue is the standard-bearer: folding 420HC trauma shears with a strap cutter, ring cutter, oxygen tank wrench, ruler and carbide glass breaker, in a MOLLE-compatible holster. The Raptor Response is a lighter version without the ring cutter and oxygen wrench for crews who do not need them. Both cut through clothing, boots, seatbelts and webbing, and fold to fit a cargo pocket or belt.
Strap cutters, glass breakers and rescue knives
Dedicated hook cutters from Gerber, Leatherman and specialist makers free a casualty from a seatbelt or harness in a single pull, and spring-loaded or carbide window punches break vehicle glass without a swing. Rescue knives combine a blunt-tipped serrated blade with a cutter and punch for crews who want one tool on the belt.
Carrying on duty
Most rescue tools have no conventional blade and can be carried without good reason, and for those that do, duty use is a clear good reason. MOLLE sheaths and belt pouches in the carry collection fit the Raptor and full-size multi-tools, and TacTree's in-house engraving service marks station, call sign or service number on most tools.
