Pocket Multi-Tools

Pocket multi-tools give most of the capability of a full-size tool in a lighter, slimmer package that lives in a trouser pocket rather than on a belt. The Leatherman Skeletool, Rebar, Bond and Free T-series sit alongside Gerber's Dime, Armbar and Truss for anyone who wants a capable tool without the bulk.

Capability without the weight

Pocket multi-tools typically weigh 100 to 190 g (3.5 to 6.7 oz) and measure under 10 cm (4 in) closed. The best of them keep the functions that get used every day, pliers, a knife, a driver and a bottle opener, and leave out the rest. The Leatherman Skeletool is the classic example, with seven tools, a carabiner clip and a pocket clip in a 142 g (5 oz) skeletonised frame, while the Rebar packs 17 tools into a slim, traditional layout.

Plier and non-plier formats

Not every pocket tool needs pliers. The Leatherman Free T2 and T4 are knife-style tools with magnetic locking and no pliers at all, and Gerber's Armbar series pairs a blade with a driver, scissors and a pry bar in a folding-knife format. For those that do, the Gerber Dime and Leatherman Micra bring spring-loaded pliers down to keyring size, and the Truss and Suspension-NXT give full-size plier capability in a lighter frame.

Everyday carry in the UK

Several pocket tools use non-locking blades under 7.62 cm (3 in), which can be carried in the UK without good reason, while others use a locking blade and should only be carried for a specific purpose. The UK carry-friendly collection lists the models that qualify, and every product page states the blade type and length.
