Folding knives

A folding knife is the most practical knife for most people. Non-locking slip-joint knives with blades under 7.62 cm (3 in) can be carried in the UK without good reason and cover the daily jobs of opening packaging, cutting cord and preparing food. Locking folders, such as the Gerber Paraframe and Leatherman Skeletool KB, add a liner, frame or back lock that holds the blade rigid for heavier cutting, and are the right choice for trade, outdoor and duty use where there is good reason to carry.

Fixed-blade knives

With no pivot or lock, a fixed blade is the strongest format and the one to choose for bushcraft, hunting, camping and survival. Full-tang construction, a comfortable handle and a sheath that holds the knife securely matter more than blade length, and the models here are selected on those criteria.

Blade steels and edges

Most knives in this collection use 420HC, 7Cr17MoV or 154CM stainless steels, which balance edge retention against ease of sharpening and corrosion resistance. Plain edges are easiest to maintain and give the cleanest cut; partially serrated blades bite through rope, webbing and fibrous material.
