Carrying a multi-tool properly

Most full-size multi-tools are sold with a basic sheath, but the way a tool is carried makes a real difference to how often it is used. A belt sheath keeps the tool at hand on shift or at work, a MOLLE pouch secures it to a plate carrier, vest or pack, and a sleeve protects a pocket tool and the pocket it rides in. The right size matters: a sheath should hold the tool securely without a fight to draw it.

Nylon or leather

Nylon sheaths are lighter, weather-resistant and easy to clean, and most include MOLLE or belt-loop fixings and elastic side pockets for a bit kit or torch. Leather sheaths are quieter, wear in rather than out and suit a more traditional belt carry; Leatherman's leather sheaths are cut to fit specific models and retain their shape for years. Both are available in sizes for the Wave+, Charge+, Surge, Signal, Rebar, Skeletool and Gerber equivalents.

Pouches and sleeves

Tool pouches offer more room than a sheath, with space for a tool, bit kit, extender and a small torch, and attach to belts and MOLLE platforms. Sleeves are the minimalist option, a slim nylon or leather cover that keeps a pocket tool clean and stops the clip wearing through fabric.

Each product page lists the tools a sheath or pouch is designed for and the maximum closed length it accepts, and sheaths from Leatherman and Gerber are sized against their own ranges. Where a tool is not listed, the closed length and width on the tool's product page can be checked against the sheath dimensions.
