Sharpeners & Maintenance

A sharp blade is safer, faster and less tiring to use than a dull one. This collection covers pocket and field sharpeners with diamond, ceramic and carbide elements for multi-tool blades, folding knives and fixed blades, alongside the oils and cleaning products that keep pivots moving and steel free of corrosion.

Keeping an edge

Multi-tool blades are typically 420HC or 154CM stainless, steels chosen for a balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. A few passes on a pocket sharpener every couple of weeks of regular use keep the edge working; a blade that has gone fully blunt needs a coarser diamond or carbide stage first. Serrated edges need a tapered ceramic or diamond rod rather than a flat stone.

Types of sharpener

Pull-through pocket sharpeners with carbide and ceramic slots are the quickest option and need no technique. Diamond plates and folding diamond sharpeners give more control and work on any steel, including the harder S30V used in some Leatherman models. Ceramic rods and hones are for finishing and touch-ups. Field sharpeners from Leatherman and Gerber combine two or three of these in a pocket-sized body.

Cleaning and lubrication

Grit, lint and dried-on dirt in the pivots are the usual reason a multi-tool stiffens up. Rinsing in warm water, drying thoroughly and applying a drop of light machine oil or dry lubricant to each pivot restores smooth action. Tools used around salt water should be rinsed in fresh water and oiled after every outing.
